Implied Logic has developed two compact and efficient, web-enabled solutions to topical business-modelling challenges facing the operators of fixed and mobile communications networks:
-
Next generation access costing ‘without a map’
-
Increasing market share with Voice Over LTE.
This initiative illustrates a subtle shift in position for Implied Logic from the modest tool provider originally advertised to the growing full-solution specialist and modelling partnership with our clients which we have actually practised from day one.
1. Generic models to facilitate rapid and reliable solutions
We have embarked on a programme of creating a new generation of generic reference models designed to exhibit the core functionality of the STEM modelling platform and its inter-operability with Excel spreadsheets. Drawing on architectures, assumptions and data in the public domain, these work-in-progress models exemplify our core expertise of de-constructing and imposing an economic-evaluation logic on the most complex topics in the communications and IT industries today.
Both models are presented online using our latest eSTEM capability.
A detailed description of each methodology is available to review offline and share with interested colleagues.
Implied Logic can work with you to customise these methodologies to your individual market and current network position in order to fast track a credible financial assessment of your strategic options.
2. Next generation access costing ‘without a map’
We have developed an efficient and credible methodology for evaluating the cost of upgrading a copper-based local-access infrastructure to provide high-speed broadband access or so-called next generation access (NGA). Our example model includes scenarios that compare the headline revenues and capex of deploying VDSL connectivity with feeder fibre or a complete GPON solution for FTTH against a baseline greenfield or current ADSL implementation.
We characterise a generic city with a division of households between four separate density classes (households per sq km). A representative street pattern is used to derive general rules to link coverage of households with distance covered for buildings passed and households connected, with awareness of how multiple dwellings and tower blocks distort the relationship between buildings passed and potential households connected.

3. Increasing market share with Voice over LTE
Mobile operators who have deployed Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks mostly resort to Circuit-Switched Fallback (CSFB) for handling voice calls even though this often means that data sessions are suspended for the duration of a voice call. Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is an emerging standard which uses IMS to carry voice as a packet-based service on the 4G data network. However, operators have been cautious to adopt this approach due to lack of consensus, and because of the cost associated with investing in the IMS sub-system.
VoLTE promises a better service experience for mobile subscribers while reducing load on an operator’s legacy network. Implied Logic has developed a methodology for comparing the benefits of being the first mover in a market to adopt VoLTE with the disadvantages of being the last mover. The cut-down interface shown below demonstrates the effects as a function of market characteristics and timing.

4. Helping great minds to think more clearly
We apply an established discipline which quickly factorises unfamiliar business environments supported by the transparency and reliability of our proprietary visual modelling software.
If you have a business-modelling problem, we can solve it! More specifically, if you need to build a robust technical and financial model of the most complex business structure – in telecommunications, IT, cloud infrastructure, logistics, construction or energy – we have the tools, expertise and experience to deliver accurate results fast.
And, if you think this is your business, we think we can help you do it better – more efficiently, consistently and reliably – with the help of advanced tools, ingenuity and insights gained from applying these techniques over two decades worldwide.
Business modelling for industry
By identifying regular patterns of specific economic attributes, we shed light on the most vexing of modelling problems. By framing a model on a flexible and widely endorsed and validated software platform, the majority of time-wasting and distracting coding effort is eliminated. You can focus on the business rules that matter and gain confidence from your colleagues, clients, regulators and investors by making it quicker and easier for them to audit and understand what you are doing. The logic is compelling!
